Think like a Writer

Revising work as a writer shows that you are paying attention to your own work and what you’re really trying to say. Writers go through different stages and process when it comes to creating a piece, and that includes a first draft, second draft, and even a third or fourth draft, until a final draft is made. Berkenrotter said “ If we are to understand how writers revise, we must pay close attention to the context in which revision occurs”. Berkentrotter mentioned how she noticed different tendencies Donald Murray had as a part of his writing process. This shows that the workstyle, pace, and outcome is dependent on the writer and their processes.

The location of a writer also plays an important role in the writing process. Just how they have certain steps they follow before and while they are writing, there could be a specific location that they write in. If the writer is working in a an unfamiliar location surrounded by unknown or unrecognizable objects, it could  create there working quality and process. The article states “when researchers removed writers from their natural settings to examine their thinking process in the laboratory, they create “a context of a powerful sort, often deeply affecting what is being observed and assessed”. By this I believe that this is saying that when you are working in an unfamiliar environment, it causes a powerful blockage to you being able to understand where you are. It’s possible that your surroundings give you inspiration or ideas to write, and being in an unfamiliar place throws off your focus.
